Cultural origins
A gambang, properly called a gambang kayu is a xylophone-like percussion instrument used in Indonesia. The bars of the instrument is made of a se wood, generally teak. Creative Exploration of Music, Culture, Artifacts & Experiences
Producing sound
Different types of sound and new ways of producing music through several experiments were carried out to produce the basic sound of the musical instrument.
03
Opening new
doors
The sound prototype was further explored to design an instrument with this sound in various scales and pitches. The grooves in the hardwood box are laser cut using the CNC machine.
04
How it works
Variations of tube length, thickness, and groove depths were explored to change the sound produced.
05
In the making
The grooves in the hardwood box are laser cut using the CNC machine. Brass tubes of varying lengths and thicknesses are tensioned above the grooves using tension strings. These strings are nailed into the wooden box to hold it in place. The materials chosen are meant to give the instrument a rustic look.
06
The performance
Our exploration and production evolved into a music band performance. We played and performed familiar music using our new unfamiliar instruments in sync with each other. These performances were judged and critiqued by esteemed designers from the music industry.
